How do I know if the screenplay competitions I'm considering are legitimate?

Best way is to ask around.  Also by checking to see who they're sponsored by.  If it's backed by big agencies, production companies, etc. chances are they're legit.  Also, I would highly recommend just posting the ones you're thinking of entering on this site.  That's why this thing is set up.  So, we can share with one another.  Just post it here and I'm sure someone will have either entered the competition or known someone who has.

I keep mentioning this one because it is great.  The ABC/Disney Fellowship can do great things for any new writer.

The only one I've entered is the AAA one.  I think it cost me like 40 dollars or something.  I heard it was a good one and I liked it because they had different genres.  They also have this thing called the Genre Fellowship.  It's part of the competition where the best script in each genre gets to be part of a fellowship.  I'm not sure exactly how it works but it involves someone working with you and your script for a period of time and then it being submitted to agents and managers.

Remember, you don't have to pay Disney anything to apply.  And if you get in, THEY pay YOU to be in the program.
